Sam Johnston is licensed to practice law in California state courts and in the federal courts of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Educated at Princeton University and the Golden Gate University School of Law, Mr. Johnston has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987. Mr. Johnston is a member of the American Bar Association and of the Alameda County Bar Association.

Mr. Johnston was previously a musician and recording artist with several bands including Box Set (Capricorn Records) and has been involved with just about every aspect of operating a band, from setting up business entities to copyright and trademark protection to negotiating and implementing a variety of contracts.

Mr. Johnston's background in environmental law and activism includes leadership roles in several important environmental campaigns in California, including years of advocacy on behalf of groups opposing the logging of ancient redwoods and the damage to watersheds in the redwood region of northern California. Mr. Johnston has served in various capacities for several environmental groups, including on the staff of the Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters (BACH) and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC). Mr. Johnston has represented both nonprofit and private clients in matters of environmental law and policy.
