Lisa Bench Nieuwveld heads the International Dispute Resolution and International Business Transactions Groups.
Lisa has extensive experience with international arbitration, both investment arbitrations, representing both investors and governments and international commercial arbitrations involving contracts, joint ventures, construction and other commercial matters, under the rules of such arbitral institutions as the ICC, WIPO, NAI and LCIA. In addition, Lisa has represented several businesses operating globally in drafting, negotiating and concluding their international commercial agreements.
Lisa recently worked for the largest Benelux firm on their International Arbitration & Litigation Team, concentrating her practice on international arbitration matters. Prior to joining the Benelux firm, she worked for a Dutch law firm on their Transatlantic and International Commercial Arbitration Teams, assisting on commercial agreements, U.S. legal matters, international arbitrations, and international litigation.
Lisa received her LL.M. in International, European and Comparative Law from Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands In 2006. She graduated cum laude from Florida State University College of Law with her Juris Doctorate (J.D.) in 2005. Lisa is an active member of the ABA's International Law Section, the Florida Bar International Section and the New York State Bar Association International Law Section. She often publishes on matters relating to international law and is an adjunct professor at Webster University in Leiden, The Netherlands teaching Negotiation Skills and How to have a Sustainable Career. Lisa frequently speaks at international conferences. She is admitted to the New York and Florida bars. Lisa is a native English speaker and is conversant in Dutch and Spanish.
Lisaâ€™s past experience includes representing:
â€¢ a Dutch investor against an Eastern European government for an indirect expropriation of their investment in an insurance company (ad hoc proceedings);
â€¢ a Dutch technology company against a local Japanese partner for breaches of their joint venture agreement (ICC proceedings);
â€¢ a Russian oil company in an enforcement procedure when the arbitral award was set aside in the state in which it was awarded;
â€¢ a dredger against a contractor in the Middle East accused of breaching the construction agreement;
â€¢ investors seeking advice on the term â€œcontrolâ€ under the Netherlands Bilateral Investment Treaties;
â€¢ a US Companyâ€™s Dutch subsidiary in draft and negotiating trademark and copyright licensing agreements; and
â€¢ several foreign companies in drafting distribution and agency, sale of goods, joint ventures and varying service agreements.
