Don Spangler received his undergraduate degree, BSBA, from Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in 1958, having majored in Business Management. He was employed by a major casualty insurance carrier in claims, for more than 11 years, rising from the position of casualty adjuster through various levels of claims supervision and management, including a period spent in a management development program.
Don then enrolled in the Stetson University College of Law and was granted the degree of Juris Doctor in 1974. During the period spent at Stetson he wa awarded several honors, including Best Brief, Best Oral Argument and Best Overall in Freshman Moot Court. He was privileged to represent Stetson in the national moot court competition during his second year of law school. He was also self-employed during law school as a licensed private investigator, concentrating on the investigation of personal injury tort claims for various practitioners in the St. Petersburg, Florida area.
Upon admission to The Florida Bar in 1974 Don began his legal career as an associate in a small (seven lawyers) insurance defense firm located in Tampa, Florida, and quickly rose to a full partnership in that firm. He left that firm in 1978 to enter a two man partnership in St. Petersburg with a friend from law school, practicing insurance defense matters as well as representing plainitiffs in personal injury cases. He was Board Certified as a Civil Trial Lawyer in 1983 by both The Florida Bar and the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He then left the partnership and continued to practice as a sole practitioner, Donald M. Spangler, PA. During his trial practice he concentrated primarily on automobile personal injury cases, but also engaged in handling medical malpractice and products liability cases, as both plaintiff's and defense counsel.
Don was certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a Circuit Civil Mediator in 1991 and added that activity to his continuing trial practice untill the fall of 1998 when he became a full time employee of The Florida Bar, located at Bar headquarters in Tallahassee, Florida. During his eleven year tenure at The Florida Bar, Don served as Bar Counsel in the prosecution of lawyer regulation matters, as Chief Branch Discipline Counsel of the Tallahassee branch office of the Bar, and as Director of the Attorney Consumer Assistance Program (ACAP), he was instrumental in the creation of the program, including staffing and training the lawyers required to maintain that program. He retired from full time employment at the end of January, 2010.
