Richard is an attorney for Vial Fotheringham LLP, a firm is dedicated to the representation and education of homeowner and condominium associations. Richard, working primarily out of Vial Fotheringham's Portland office, represents HOAs for general purposes, but has special expertise in planned community work as it relates to construction defect issues. Rich also represents individuals and businesses in commercial litigation, regulatory compliance issues, and contractual creation and dispute issues. Richard has practiced law in the areas of real estate, homeowner associations, and litigation since 1981. Having held a real estate license and clerked at the Oregon Department of Real Estate in the condominium section, he brings a depth of experience in common property ownership issues as they relate to real estate.
Richardâ€™s broad experience has provided him with the opportunity to speak both locally and nationally on issues relating to the creation and management of healthy communities, and has been an author and editor of numerous association-related articles.

Richard has been a board member and president for CAI (Community Association Institute), a board member and vice-chair of the WA County Fair Board, an executive committee chair of OR State Bar Aviation section, and is a former board member of the Oregon State Bar Real Estate and Land Use Section.
Richard is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Utah State Bars.
In his free time, Richard enjoys photography, birding, and raising registered cattle on the Vial Homestead in Washington County, Oregon.
